In 2016, when the demolition of the Criminal Justice Center was about to begin, Friedmann asked the sheriff’s office for a tour, so that he could photograph the old jail for a website. “But I also had another goal: to visit the cell where I had been raped, to obtain closure.” Instead, he broke down, and afterward he was beset by nightmares and panic attacks. “I resolved that should I ever be jailed again and subjected to the same sexual abuse, I would have the resources to escape or defend myself. And since the new jail was being built, I had a one-time opportunity to accomplish that by concealing escape tools and weapons in the facility as a contingency plan. And that’s what I did.” He’d put them in all of the jail’s fourteen cell blocks because, in the event that he was imprisoned, he couldn’t know where he’d be held. He described the process as strangely therapeutic: “The further I progressed with my contingency plan, the more the effects of that trauma diminished.” He concluded, “My actions were not rational, but responses to extreme emotional trauma often are not rational.” He quoted Solzhenitsyn, as he’d done in the letter to me—“How can you expect a man who’s warm to understand a man who’s cold?”—and noted that he should have received therapy long ago.
